You visited my school two years ago and now have come back to talk to other, new year 7s. You`ve saved them from going into drugs, and I can still remember that inspiring talk you gave me and others. Thank you for the warning signs, and you`re truly amazing. If you weren`t around, there`d be more drug users on the streets buying their lives away. Thankyou.

June 6, 2013
Hi Paul, Many thanks for a return visit to our school. As before, your audience of Year Six pupils (full of promise, bravado and itching to join High School in September)listened in the rapt silence they reserve only for a very select few. What they were gifted this afternoon was the experience of a truly inspirational man, ready to share the mistakes he made in making choices as a teenager, the dangers of following the crowd and the hard road he has trodden to get his life back. You have given this wonderful group of children permission to make their own, informed choices; to resist peer pressure. In the question and answer workshops you engaged with the children with an openness, honesty, care and presence which they will remember for a long time. We are looking forward to seeing you again next year to prepare our next Year Six 'Little Fishes' for life in 'The Big Pond'. All the best, Paul Dan Mattingly, Key Stage Two Manager, Richmond Avenue Primary School

Listened to your talk last night and was overwhelmed at how you lived your life for all those years. Congratulations to you and how you have turned your life around but furthermore how you spend your life now educating our children. It scares the life out of me and I pray my children never go down that same road. Rest assured, I will use your site to continually teach them the dangers and consequences associated with drink and drugs. A great hour well spent - glad I was there. Thank you and good luck Paul.

Hi Paul, Just want to say a big thank you for coming to Pentonville today. It was a very interesting experience to listen to your life story and your message about choices that we made in life was heard by the prisoners. Stay in touch and hope to see you again! You do a fantastic job!

Paul's ability to captivate young peoples attention is second to none. Pauls ruthless honesty matches his ruthless past. Pauls message of substance abuse doesn't politely tap you on the shoulder, it picks you up by the collar and demands attention. If I'm honest I thought it was going to be yet another roadshow and was not exactly looking forward to it, but when you told us your story I was shocked it had actually made me stop and think and realise how easily people can fall into bad habits. Thank you so so much, and continue your hard work because you have really helped many realise the truth about cannabis. "Paul, you are an amazing man with the most interesting life journey to retell over and over again. Your talk at havering college to us, social work degree students felt like minutes. It was filled with fascinating, inspiring, eye opening, touching details. You certainly are a very incredible person who has found strength, courage and determination to overcome the life you once had. I admire your compassion and motivation to make the children of today's society aware of the cruel consequences of bad choices. Your knowledge and experience of drugs and alcohol abuse along with gang and knife crime touched me and the powerful message I gained will stay with me and be one I will never forget. "

Hi. I sat in on your talk tonight with the young people in Leyton, as a mum with two boys living on an estate that is prone for drugs made me think about how we can help our young people and I think inviting you to talk with the community it may just open some peoples eyes. I know it did for me today. I am so proud that you have managed to change your life around and hope that you continue to inspire young people to grow into positive individuals. Your story touched me and I really thought it was important that your family forgave you and still love and support you.

Great Advice. Men like you are such inspiring character, and inspire lots of people. My sister came home from school and told me all about you. Knowing you go out and talk to all these schools is inspiring, more to the fact that you have been through it all yourself and still you manage to smile and you are willing to help everyone else. I just hope all teenagers listen to you, and decide to take the right footsteps in life.

No one better than you that could explain the impact of drugs&alchohol etc. from your own experience it really does emphasise and show how much you can change peoples life's and you've made such an impact on peoples view with your presentation, and to be honest ours and many other communities were getting worse and you can change this and people around us by just telling people your story. Everyone at dewarenne enjoyed having you here and thank you very much and all the best for the future!

Your speech at our school was so insperational! I really enjoyed listening to you and your storys. The pictures, especially of your leg, were horrific and i would never think of smoking or taking drugs! It's disgusting:-( I'm glad you came and talked to us about this, because now hopefully people will realise that drugs and smoking do make effects on you and are really bad, so they'll think twice before taking some! THANKYOU! Emily :-) xx

Your knowledge and experience of drugs and alcohol abuse along with gang crime touched me and the powerful message I gained will stay with me and be one I will never forget. "

"Thank you so much for doing a talk at our school. It really hit home and although i have never touched drugs it has made me more determined to stay as far away as possible! Hearing a story like yours really shocked me and i think its brillant that you have turned your life around in such a dramatic way. Thanks again

"Thank you for becoming part of the Participation Project at Havering College helping in the teaching of social work students. The talk about your life experience is open and honest and you share details freely about the life you have lived. Your talk is an inspiration to all of those who hear it. Your teaching on Service User Empowerment really showed the students that anything is possible if we want it enough, and have support from people who believe in us. Paul, carry on the good work and speak to as many young people as you possibly can I hope that every school and college in the country eventually invites you to speak to their students. Keep up the good work and well done."

I can tell you that many students have taken your incredible advice. I wish you luck and hope you know that you are one of the most influential person on earth!

Your presentation at my school has showed me never to start off with the littlest drugs that you dont think can harm you because it will probably lead to taking bigger drugs. And once you try it you just want it again. Its very good what you are doing, trying to stop people from taking drugs or even trying anything. You must get a little nervous talking about your life in front of different people, because you have no idea what they will think of you. i think you are very brave. Its a great thing your doing for kids today, they'll be scared of everything thats happened to you; happen to them. ~Im happy for you that you talk to your daughter now, after all those years. I bet shes proud to have a dad like you, i would be. -Hope you continue what you are doing, you'll save so many lives. Thank you for coming to my school it was really interesting. The most UNFORGETTABLE awareness talk I have ever experienced. A real unfortunate life story which has the power to make you take heed, so gripping you could sit and listen for hours. A man which has been re-living his traumatic ordeal in the hope of being able to save our generation and future generation of kids from making the same life-changing mistake. I would just like to say thank you soo much for sharing and giving us an insight into your life. I was so inspired and touched by your talk I have been passing on the message and making people aware of you. I wish you all the best for your future, keep doing what your doing it is very well needed. TRULY AMAZING!!!Nat

I am writing to you to commend Paul Hannaford as a drugs and crime speaker. In the time I have worked with Paul he has proven to be an arresting speaker at both KS3 and 4. He has a natural presence and approachable manner in regard to young people. His talks are both informative and powerful yet at the same time he is able to establish a personal rapport and emotionally reflexive understanding with the students. This is particularly effective in that his own background means he appeals most to the young men probably most at risk of involvement in drugs and crime. Yet there is also much that would appeal to a broad range of students including young women. I know for a fact that his frank and honest talks have influenced the behaviour of young people in our school and led them to make better choices as regards drugs. In all my dealings with Paul I have found him to be a friendly, forthright and organised individual. He uses ICT well both during and in an ongoing way after his presentations. He is professional in his dealings with other agencies and always punctual. To sum up Paul is a superlative speaker, with a demonstrable ability to change the behaviour of young people for the better

The talk that you gave at our school today was one of the most inspirational talks I've ever listened to. Hearing about your story and all the things that you've been through over the years really made me appreciate the life that I have at home, school etc. I think its incredible how you managed to fight your way through it all, and the fact that you've been clean for the last 6 years is amazing. And you were right about Ria, she's absolutely beautiful. Well done with everything, and thank you :)

Would just like to say thank you for your honesty at Chaffords, my son came home & couldn't wait to log on & show me all about you. He told me some of the awful things that your drug addiction made you do & I think things really hit home with home & will definitely help him to steer clear from that life style! If your story only helps one child stay away from drink & drugs it will still be worthwhile, so thank you again.

I just want to thank you for coming to speak to all of us at my school today, I cried and found your story so inspiring, it's a lot more hard hitting coming from someone who's been there and experienced it personally, rather than just a teacher telling you about drugs etc in a lesson. I'm not into drugs anyway but you've really opened my eyes to how easily the odd joint at a party can soon escalate, I'll certainly think of you when I'm in a social situation like that. Thanks again :)

"Paul you were absolutely amazing. You have a gift for being outspoken,, honest and saying things as they are. Your ability to hold everyones attention is unique, and i have never seen our foster carers so tranfixed. Your frank, honest and sometimes brutal account of your life hit home and had a tremendous impact on everyone present. There were times that some of the things you recounted were hard to listen to however necessary because this is the reality and needs to be heard. Paul you are doing a great job and you have earnt everyones respect. You are no longer a victim of your circumstances but a survivor and the work you are doing in educating children is tremendous. I wish you every success in the future and thank you once again for taking time to come and talk to us. Best wishes maragret""

You were the first person who has ever spoken at our school or my previous school that has actually made me stop and think wow.. this is happening all around me. You have inspired hundreds of people, but in what way? You have changed the way I think about drugs and alcohol and people who consume them. You have inspired me to try and stop the people I know that are doing drugs or drinking alcohol before is gets to late because I was not as aware of how much can affect you. You are also very inspiring in a way that you managed to get yourself out of it after being hooked up for so long and staying clean for 6 years now and finally doing the right things for your daughter look up to.

Hello Paul, Today you changed the lives of 15 young people from the broadwater Farm estate London. From hearing you speak and the reactions of the boys that I coach week in week out, from seeing the messages above this one. It is clear that you have endevoured more than most people do in a lifetime for a reason, that reason is to create change in other young people's lives. The conventional method of drug awareness was blown out the water today by you. Its a harsh world out there and we must fight fire with fire. I admire your courage and will deifntaley be seeing you agains soon! Well done sir! Huuuuge thanks! Perry Sophocleous.

Thank you Paul for coming to my school (Brentwood County High) because it has given me a warning that no one else could have about the darkness and pain about using drugs. Sometimes I here people in the playground of my school joking about taking drugs, and if only they knew about drugs properly would they stop talking about it! It was really gruesome seeing and hearing the things you told us! Thanks again!

" I was a parent at you talk a while back...Your comments about cannabis and the change from resin to strong strains like skunk-weed are excellent. It is very true when they say curriousity killed the cat. I have seen some horrendous sights in my time as a chemist which all could probaly have been changed through strong and real advice like you offer. I stopped being a pharmascist after a methadone patient would not wait for the controlled drugs cabinet to be opened on the timer. He assaulted me it was 7am and it was horrific. As parents we need to teach our children through subline and accurate advice that substance abuse is as bad as it really is. Keep up your great work and thank you.

paul i would like to say a big thanks for all your talks every monday at newman catholic college in harlesden were the q.p.r. kickz brent project takes place. the kids have taken a shine to you and enjoy your chats about drugs, knife crime, drinking, gangs and bullying. they really listen and seem very interested and the enthusiasm that you put into your chats and playing football with them afterwards is great, the kids treat you like a team mate which is great to see. hopefully it will stop a lot of them from ever using drugs and turning to crime, i'm sure that in all the kids around the country you have spoken to some 100,000 odd, a lot of kids who take in your advice will end up having a better life and not a wasted one. a big thank you from me and all the kids at the project, keep up the good work

"I observed paul talking to a group of school children about his experience with drugs, gangs, and knife crime. I have never seen the group of childen so interested in listening to an adult talk. pauls presentation was delivered with such honesty and raw material. I feel the children responded so well as this is a real experience. pauls talks are very informative and demonstrate the dangers of drug taking and gangs. I feel Pauls talks are so impressionable on school children. "

I dont do drugs or anything like that but your still an inspiration for me. Even away from the topic when we was walking up to the station you gave me good tips on body building. Im so proud of you and im not even your mother or daughter. Good luck from the future and stay out off trouble as theres hardly any people willing to do even 1/2 the things you do. :) I WILL REMEMBER YOU FOREVER.....

Thank you for the presentation i went in thinking that is was going to be one of those pointless things they make you watch that are aimed at 1% of the audience. But it wasn't. It was increadible amazing and was relevent to each and every one of us. There are now three people in this world that i would discribe as truley inspirational: Travis Pastrana, Steve Jobs and You. Thank you again

Today @ St.Martins school Paul came along and did a talk, the talk lasted around an hour, and within this hour Paul described his life story and experiences, and how peer pressure changed Paul's life. The talk was very interesting, engaging, and the words were very memorable, and in a way everyone could relate to what Paul was saying It's shocking what you went through in your life, and how your life has changed since, and I think its great that you've learnt from your terrible mistakes, and used your life experience to give something back, helping others to become aware of the dangers of drugs. Your talk was very inspiring, we could all learn a thing or two from Paul, thankyou.

You came to our school and your message was really hard hitting and inspirational and I'd like to thank you because your probably used to it now but it must be hard talking about your past, I agree it should be taught into the young age groups because that where it starts, drugs, knife crime etc Is a important subject And your speech is not patriotnising in anyway and it gets straight to the point an that's what they need So thank you again and I hope you inspire other people with your story to keep off drugs and all the bad stuff and hopefully lead successfull lives like you've turned your life around :) Thank you

Paul is working in partnership with the Life team and gives an input on our courses across London. The young people on our courses listen intently to Pauls very raw and honest account of being an addict and the consequences. We find this session invaluable, the feedback at the end of the course confirms that by sharing his experiences Paul will shape the choices people make in the future. I have been working with Paul for the last 6 months and his dedication and quality of work never ceases to amaze me. Paul has a unique ability to engage with hard to reach young people and educate them on the dangers of drugs. His story has saved many young people from a life of crime. QPR in the Community Trust will continue to work with Paul and support young people in Central and West London. Matt

Hey Paul, you came to my school, BCHS, today :) I thought it was amazing how you turned your life around, and now tell your life story truthfully. You taught me loads about how dangerous drugs are- I knew not to take them, but I didn't know the full effects. I thought I knew about drugs & drink, but I didn't. Thanks to you, I know now never to even try drugs. When you were talking about your daughter, I honestly had tears in my eyes. Thanks again xxx
